How the envelope system works
The envelope method predates banking apps: paid in cash, households split wages into labelled envelopes for rent, food and coal. It still works for one reason — a physical limit. When the grocery envelope is empty, you notice before the overdraft does.
Fixed bills (rent, utilities, subscriptions) stay in the bank. Envelopes are for the variable categories where overspending happens. On a biweekly pay schedule there are two months a year with three paydays. Many envelope budgeters fill envelopes from two paychecks a month and send the third straight to savings.

What is envelope budgeting?
You divide your spending money into labelled envelopes — groceries, fuel, fun — at the start of each pay period. When an envelope is empty, spending in that category stops until the next payday.
Do I have to use cash?
No. Many people use separate bank pots or sub-accounts as digital envelopes. Cash works best for categories you tend to overspend on, because handing over notes feels more real than tapping a card.
Which expenses go in envelopes?
Variable spending: groceries, fuel, eating out, personal spending. Fixed bills like rent and subscriptions are usually paid directly from the bank account and stay out of envelopes.
What if an envelope runs out early?
Either wait until payday or move money from another envelope — deliberately. Moving money is allowed; what matters is that you choose which category gives it up.
